After Care for Tooth Extraction

1. Bite on the gauze to help stop the bleeding

After the tooth is extracted, the dentist will place a clean piece of gauze over the wound. Bite firmly on it for about 30 minutes. This helps stop the bleeding and allows a blood clot to form.

Remember:

  • Do not talk while biting on the gauze.

  • Do not spit or suck with your mouth.

2. Do not use a straw, rinse, or smoke

For the first 24 hours after extraction, avoid the following:

  • Do not drink using a straw.

  • Do not rinse your mouth too vigorously.

  • Do not smoke.

These actions can dislodge the blood clot and cause Dry Socket (a painful condition).

3. Use ice to reduce swelling

Your face may swell on the day of the extraction. You can wrap an ice pack in a towel and place it on your cheek (on the side of the extraction).

✔️ Apply for 15 minutes, then rest 15 minutes, and repeat.✔️ Ice is only recommended on the first day. It is usually not necessary after the second day.

4. Eat soft, warm foods

For the next few days, eat gentle and soft foods such as:

  • Porridge, noodles, egg drop soup, steamed egg

  • Soft rice, bananas, tofu

❌ Avoid:

  • Very hot food or soup

  • Spicy food

  • Hard, crunchy, or crumbly foods (such as peanuts or fried chicken skin)

5. Keep your mouth clean, but be careful

From the second day onwards, you may brush your teeth, but avoid the extraction site.

6. Take the medications as prescribed

If the dentist prescribed painkillers or antibiotics, take them exactly as directed. Do not forget doses or stop the medication on your own. This helps prevent inflammation or infection.

7. See the dentist immediately if you notice these symptoms

Please return to the dental clinic as soon as possible if you experience:

  • Pain that becomes worse, especially after the second day

  • Fever, facial redness, or swelling

  • A bad smell or unpleasant taste in the mouth

  • Difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing

Reminder:The wound usually takes about 7–10 days to heal gradually. Proper care will help you recover faster and more comfortably.
